The scientific name for the grey squirrel in Ohio is Sciurus carolinensis. This species is also known as the eastern gray squirrel, a native North American tree squirrel. The name Sciurus refers to its bushy tail, while carolinensis indicates its origin in the Carolinas. I’m pretty sure this one did not find it’s way to Ohio from the Carolinas, at least not in the last few thousand generations.
